How does a center satisfy customer trust to ensure the safety and stability for their stored data? Being focused on redundancies fulfills the Scout Motto and contributes greatly to a secure data environment.

When you have a 9-5 job seven days a week, you hear regularly about the same topics, the same industry experts, and the same processes. You can probably recite your company's sales pitch verbatim in your sleep, maybe even in a foreign language. We all know that computers generate heat (think how hot your laptop gets when you're really giving it a work-out). Imagine that heat multiplied by 1000+ servers in a data center, all "working-out." Because of this heat generation, cooling data center racks is a vital and costly endeavor.

As data becomes more of an asset in the eyes of business owners, the "IT" team leaders are moving from the back room to the boardroom. Conversations about how to best manage valuable data are happening and people are looking to their CTO's, CIO's, and similar positions to lead the way in all things data. While some mid-sized businesses may not think they are ready for data analytics today, most admit they are planning to leverage data assets in the next three to five years. So what does this mean for today's strategy building? What can be done now to prepare for the future?

Tiers of data center classification system
Fri, 08/15/2014 - 11:13

Data centers are increasing nationwide, so it only makes sense that an established system classifies and distinguishes them. With categorization into four different levels, data centers join the ranks of delicious and fancy cakes that are also organized into "tiers."

Many organizations have become largely dependent on the quality and availability of their IT applications and information for day-to-day operations. Disruptions to IT services for a few minutes can be very expensive to a business highly dependent on systems and applications. And, many organizations will experience reduced revenue and/or increased costs if they cannot access and use their primary software applications and data for an extended period of hours. These issues create a "fork in the road" for businesses as they decide whether to build their own data center space or lease space at a data center.

Rewind back in time to your elementary school days. More specifically, think back to that super confidential top secret that you just had to tell your best friend − no, this couldn’t wait until recess! How would you reveal that you "have a crush on the new girl in school" or that your friend should "come over to play this afternoon" when said friend is sitting far across the room? How could you communicate with friends without a teacher, classmate, or your crush (gasp!) intercepting that secret message? Elementary school communications involved mirror writing, Pig Latin, and the occasional invisible ink; regardless of the complex method employed, the secret message was considered a success when it reached the friend safely.

When Data Realty Northern Indiana opened their data center in October 2012, they knew the power infrastructure was ideal "on paper," but did not anticipate the term "ideal" would continue to be used in their vocabulary once the data center was fully functional. Now, 16 months of operation later, Chief Technology Officer Tom Panozzo says, "The power supply and feed has been perfect. We haven't had one blip or hiccup in the power from AEP. And the best part is we have every reason to believe it will continue. This is the standard operating procedure...ideal power. That's pretty cool."

Today, as we move further into the information age, we are experiencing an economic transformation similar to the American Industrial Revolution. Thinking back to the Industrial Revolution’s use of resources like wood, coal, and water, then consider the opportunities available with the "raw materials" of today’s revolution − data. Sure, we type away on computers and understand the information available through technology, but do we understand just how revolutionary this data impact will be?
